The popliteus (also popliteus muscle, popliteal muscle, latin: musculus popliteus) is a deep muscle of the posterior group of the lower leg located behind the knee joint. It is the smallest and most superior muscle of this muscle group.
The popliteus originates from the lateral condyle of the femur.
The popliteus inserts onto the posterior surface of the tibia proximal to the soleal line.
The main functions of the popliteus are flexion and internal rotation of the knee.
The popliteus is innervated by the tibial nerve.
