Obturator externus

The obturator externus (also external obturator, external obturator muscle, obturator externus muscle, latin: musculus obturatorius externus) is a triangular shaped muscle of the posterior muscle group of the pelvic girdle.

Origin

The obturator externus originates from the external surface of the obturator membrane.

Insertion

The obturator externus muscle inserts on the trochanteric fossa of the femur.

Action

The major function of the external obturator is the external rotation of the femur.

Innervation

The obturator externus is innervated by the obturator nerve that arises from the lumbar plexus.
